Privacy Policy

This policy explains what information Melody Monkey collects, why we collect it, who we share it with, and the choices you have. We try to collect as little as possible and to be plain about the rest.

The short version: You can use most of Melody Monkey — the fretboard, chord and scale library, progressions, metronome, and tuner — without an account, and that activity stays on your device. Creating an account (needed for the personal music teacher and audio analysis) means we store your name, email, and a securely hashed password. We use privacy-conscious analytics to understand how the app is used, and messages you send to your personal music teacher are processed by OpenAI.

1. Who we are

Melody Monkey ("Melody Monkey", "we", "us") is an independent, early-access web app for learning and practicing music. For any privacy question or request, contact us at melodymonkeyemail@gmail.com.

2. Information we collect

Information you give us

Account details — when you sign up, we collect your display name, email address, and a password. Your password is stored only as a salted cryptographic hash; we never store or see it in plain text.
Verification and reset codes — short-lived numeric codes we email you to verify your address or reset your password.
Personal music teacher messages — the questions and messages you send to your personal music teacher, so it can respond.
Audio you upload — if you upload an audio file for chord/key/tempo analysis, we process that file to return the analysis.

Information collected automatically

Usage analytics — we use PostHog and Google Analytics to record which pages and features you use and which buttons you click, plus technical details such as browser type, device type, referring page, and an approximate location derived from your IP address. If you are logged in, these events are associated with your account so we can understand how features are used over time.
Local storage — we store small values in your browser (such as your theme preference, whether you have chosen to browse as a guest, your login token, and recently viewed items) so the app works and remembers your settings. Our analytics providers also store an identifier in your browser to recognize returning visits.

Your microphone stays local. The tuner and metronome use your microphone and audio entirely inside your browser for real-time pitch detection. That audio is never recorded, uploaded, or sent to us.

3. How we use your information

To create and secure your account, verify your email, and let you reset a forgotten password.
To provide features you request — generating personal music teacher responses and analyzing audio you upload.
To understand how the app is used so we can fix problems, decide what to build next, and improve the experience.
To communicate with you about your account (for example, sending verification or password-reset codes).

We do not sell your personal information, and we do not use your data to build advertising profiles.

4. Who we share it with

We share data only with the service providers we rely on to run Melody Monkey, and only as needed to operate the app:

Each provider processes your data under its own privacy terms. We may also disclose information if required by law, or to protect the rights, safety, and security of our users and the service.

5. How long we keep it

We keep your account information for as long as your account exists. Personal music teacher messages and analytics events are retained for a limited period to operate and improve the service. Verification and password-reset codes expire within minutes. When you delete your account, we delete or anonymize your associated personal data, except where we must keep it to comply with legal obligations.

6. Your choices and rights

Browse without an account — most tools work in guest mode with no personal data collected on our servers.
Access, correct, or delete — email melodymonkeyemail@gmail.com to request a copy of your data, correct it, or delete your account. Depending on where you live, you may have rights under the GDPR, UK GDPR, or CCPA/CPRA; we honor these requests regardless of location.
Analytics — you can limit tracking with your browser's privacy settings or an ad/tracker blocker; the core app still works.

7. Security

We protect data with measures including HTTPS everywhere, salted password hashing, and access controls on our backend. No method of transmission or storage is perfectly secure, but we work to protect your information and to limit what we collect in the first place.

8. Children

Melody Monkey is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child has provided us personal information, contact us and we will delete it.

9. International users

We operate using service providers located in the United States. If you access Melody Monkey from outside the U.S., your information will be processed in the U.S. and other countries where our providers operate, which may have different data-protection laws than your own.

10. Changes to this policy

As Melody Monkey is in active development, we may update this policy from time to time. When we make material changes, we will update the "Last updated" date above. Continuing to use the app after changes take effect means you accept the updated policy.
