Bass Amps & DI
An amp shapes and projects your tone on stage. A DI box sends a clean copy of your signal straight to a mixer or interface. Most working bassists rely on both.
What a bass amp does
A bass amp takes the raw signal from your instrument, boosts it, shapes its tone (via EQ and often built-in effects), and pushes it out through a speaker loud enough to be heard on stage. Amps generally come in two formats:
- Combo amp — the amplifier and speaker built into a single, self-contained unit. Convenient, portable, and the simplest option for most players.
- Head + cabinet — a separate amplifier ("head") connected to a separate speaker cabinet. More flexible (mix and match heads and cabs, add more power) but bulkier to transport.
What a DI box does
A DI (direct input) box takes your bass's signal and sends a clean, unprocessed copy directly into a mixing board or audio interface — no amp or speaker required. This is the standard way to record bass in a studio, and it's extremely common live too, either instead of a mic'd amp or blended alongside one for extra clarity and consistency in the mix.
Common questions
What is the difference between a combo amp and a head/cabinet setup?
A combo amp has the amplifier and speaker built into one unit. A head-and-cabinet setup uses a separate amp head connected to a separate speaker cabinet, offering more power and flexibility at the cost of extra bulk.
What does a DI box do?
It sends your bass's signal directly into a mixer or audio interface, clean and unprocessed by any amp or speaker — standard practice for recording and common in live sound too.
Do I need an amp if I record direct via DI?
Not necessarily for recording — a DI signal alone is a complete, usable clean bass tone. Many engineers still like blending in a mic'd amp for extra character, but it isn't required.
Can you use a DI and an amp at the same time?
Yes — many DI boxes have a "thru" output that also feeds your amp on stage, so the audience hears your amp while the sound engineer gets a clean DI signal for the mix.
