Anatomy of a chord symbol

Every chord symbol starts with a root letter (A–G, plus an optional ♯/♭), followed by an optional quality describing what's stacked on top. No quality at all simply means a plain major triad.

Lead sheets: melody + chords, nothing else

A lead sheet writes out only the melody line and the chord symbols above it — no bass line, no piano voicing, no drum part. It's shorthand that trusts the performer to fill in the accompaniment, which is exactly why it's the standard format in jazz, musical theater, and gig charts.

💡 Slash chords: "C/E" means play a C major chord with E — not C — as the lowest note. It's a compact way to write a specific bass line under a chord progression.

Common questions

How do you read a chord symbol like Cmaj7?

The letter names the root (C); "maj7" means a major triad plus a major 7th above the root.

What is a lead sheet?

A simplified score with just melody and chord symbols, leaving accompaniment and voicing to the performer.

What does a slash chord like C/E mean?

The letter before the slash is the chord; the letter after is the bass note to play underneath.

Do chord symbols tell you the exact voicing?

No — just which notes belong. Order, octave, and doubling are up to the performer.
