A light, continuous motion

The core ukulele strumming motion is a light, continuous flick of the wrist — not a full arm strum like you might use on guitar. Because a ukulele is small and its nylon or fluorocarbon strings are soft under the finger, a big arm motion is more force than the instrument needs. Keep the movement compact and let your wrist do almost all the work.

Alternating down and up continuously — even on beats where you don't necessarily want a strong accent — is what keeps the motion smooth and the tempo steady.

💡 Practice tip: keep your wrist moving down-up-down-up continuously, even over beats where you're not actually touching the strings. This "constant motion" habit is what keeps ukulele strumming feeling loose instead of jerky.

Common questions

What is basic ukulele strumming technique?

A light, continuous wrist motion that brushes down and up across the strings, rather than a full arm strum. The motion stays small and relaxed the whole time.

Should you strum ukulele with your arm or your wrist?

Mostly your wrist. Unlike guitar, where a bigger arm motion is common, ukulele's small size and light strings respond best to a compact, continuous wrist flick.

What is a downstroke and upstroke?

A downstroke brushes the strings from the top (near the headstock side of your hand) toward the floor; an upstroke brushes back upward. Alternating them creates a steady down-up-down-up rhythm.

Why does ukulele strumming feel different from guitar strumming?

Ukuleles are smaller and use lighter nylon or fluorocarbon strings, so they respond better to a light, continuous motion than the bigger arm strums often used on guitar.
