What makes a bassline "walk"?

A walking bass line plays one note per beat, almost always in steady quarter notes, using a mix of chord tones and passing notes to move from the current chord smoothly into the next one. It's the traditional backbone of jazz and swing — typically played on upright bass or fretless electric for their smooth, singing sustain — but the underlying skill (constant, purposeful stepwise motion) sharpens bass playing in any style.

The approach tone

The signature move in walking bass is the approach tone: the note on the last beat of a bar, chosen specifically to lead into the next chord's root.

A simple, reliable four-beat recipe: beat 1 root, beat 2 a chord tone (3rd or 5th), beat 3 another chord tone, beat 4 an approach tone into the next chord's root.

💡 Practice tip: Loop a simple ii–V–I slowly with a metronome, playing only roots at first. Once that's locked in, add one chord tone per bar, then finally the approach tone on beat 4.

Common questions

What is a walking bass line?

A bassline that plays steady quarter notes — one per beat — moving stepwise or arpeggiated between chord tones to travel smoothly from one chord to the next.

Where did walking bass come from?

It developed in jazz and swing, traditionally played on upright (double) bass, and later carried over to fretless and fretted electric bass in jazz-influenced styles.

What is an "approach note"?

A note played on the last beat before a chord change, a half step (chromatic) or whole step (diatonic) away from the next chord's root, that leads smoothly into it.

Can you walk a bass line on electric bass?

Yes — while walking bass is traditionally associated with upright and fretless bass, the same quarter-note, chord-tone-and-approach-note approach works on any bass.
